Aim

Scheme of a Floating Wetland

Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC)

The floating wetland system is widely used in restoring our ecosystem in terms of :

  1. Enhance water quality
  2. Improve habitat
  3. Enhance resilience to climate impacts

Benefits

  • Enhance water quality: captures nutrients and convert typical pollutants that could otherwise damage and threaten the lakes.
  • Improve habitat: Exposed roots promote biofilm growth and sedimentation
  • Enhance resilience to climate impacts: by absorbing floods, buffering storms, and supporting adaptable ecosystems.

Process

  1. Nutrients absorbed and used by microbes and plants.
  2. Stored in both organic and inorganic sediment.
  3. Nutrients converted into gas via volatilization.
  4. Aquatic plants absorb and remove elements from sediment and water.
